Taking Care Of A Goldfish Bowl

The first step into having goldfish is to have a home for it whether it be a goldfish bowl or goldfish aquarium and learn how to begin taking care of your new pet. Goldfish bowls are an excellent gift for your kids and they will love taking care of goldfish, their new friend. The only thing is with small goldfish bowls they do require more work and maintenance then a regular aquarium or tank would. Goldfish bowls are not the ideal home though when taking care of goldfish.

Why are goldfish bowls more work then goldfish aquariums?

Well that’s easy! The thing is a goldfish bowl has no filter, and has no air pump as well. So taking care of a goldfish in a bowl will be more work. What you will need to do in this case, you will need to keep an eye out on your goldfish more often. The less water that your goldfish have to live in the more work is required.

Goldfish Bowls Water Quality

Some things you should do in taking care of a goldfish bowl is to perform regular water changes to keep water clean and healthy for your fish. Also when performing water changes make sure you add chlorine remover to the new freshwater your putting in. You should also make sure the temperature of the water your adding in is equal to the temperature of the water inside the bowl. Shocking goldfish with a sudden change in temperature can result in goldfish diseases, sickness and even death. The general rule of thumb is try not to go more then a degree over or under and make it as close as possible. Another thing to do is check the water chemistry in your goldfish bowl frequently as things can turn for the worse quickly when you have less water, no filtration and no air pump. Water quality checks are very important when taking care of goldfish bowls.

Having a goldfish bowl for beginners are great. Just need to be a little more cautious thats all. Goldfish are a dirty fish and they can foul up your water in no time if left unchecked. Goldfish eat and it pretty much comes out the other end right away. By performing regular goldfish bowl maintenance you should be safe and your goldfish healthy.

Goldfish bowls like I said are great for beginners and kids but only good for one fish really. If your like me I would like to see more goldfish then one swimming around. So the prefect question you and others should ask themselves before getting into hobby is “Goldfish bowl or Goldfish Aquarium -Tank?” What are the pros and cons and how much time you really want to spend taking care of goldfish? One last little goldfish advice or tip if you have any cats, try and keep them away or your new little friend might just be lunch πŸ™‚

***** Goldfish bowls are too small for goldfish really and should not be kept in them, if person does decide to do this as their own choice be careful and take proper care of them. Goldfish bowls are just plain too small, would you like to be confined in a small area??? Goldfish need space to live and be healthy.********

Taking care of a goldfish bowl is very important. Goldfish bowls really are not the ideal home for a fish as it’s really too small but many people keep fish as pets in bowls.

People really need to take care of this, as it’s very important as if you don’t the water can go bad very quickly with such little water and such a messy fish.

You should perform water changes almosy every 2nd or 3rd day about 25% of the water each time to keep the water chenistry good in the goldfish bowl. For cleaning your bowl, in case its gets dirty you can always buy a tank cleaner brush to clean the glass. You could always put all the water in a spare tank with the water and goldfish to thoroughly clean it. You never use soap when cleaning your tank. Use warm water and papertowels and wipe it down. Some people also use a salt solution to clean their goldfish bowl as well. Just make sure you use aquarium salt and not table salt.

Take care of your tank or bowl and your goldfish will stay healthy.

If you have any other questions please ask. What type of fish do you have, a goldfish or something else?

Sincerely,

where do i put my goldfish while i am cleaning his tank??

Do i buy another bowl or what???

hii
ive received one bowl with three god fishes as a gift,15days before. saddly out of which one died. though i change the water after every 3 days and feed them 3 times a day.and now the other one is also showing the same sign, floating abnormaly flipped sideways.
dont know what to do.
please help me!!

Yeah when cleaning your goldfish bowl you should have somwheres to place your fish in. Buying a new tank or bowl not necessary you can always use a bucket you may have kicking around just make sure no soaps or detergents were ever used in there. Your best bet is to go buy a Rubbermaid container at the store to be on the safe side. Simply place them in here while you doing the cleaning.

Sorry to hear about your new goldfish you received 15 days ago.

The first problem is that you shouldn’t be feeding your goldfish 3 times a day. Goldfish are a very messy and dirty fish and they create a lot of waste as goldfish do not have stomachs.

Feeding them 3 times a day is only fouling up your water making it toxic to your goldfish. Once a day is sufficient or even once every 2 days. remember this is a goldfish bowl and the water quality can turn for the worse in a heart beat.

You should really consider getting a larger aquarium with filter and air pump. You will have much better luck with goldfish this way.

Hope this helps.

So my friends had a wedding last Friday and their centerpieces were these big vases with about 5 goldfish in each one. Most of the fish got taken home by guests, but the wedding couple got stuck with about 15 leftovers. They had to leave for the honeymoon on Monday, so I volunteered to take them. The problem is, they had them all crammed into like a one gallon bowl!! Needless to say, one day later I had to change the water. Luckily I have an old one gallon tank with an air filter, but of course that’s still wayyyy too small for so many fishies. So, I have them split up now between the tank, the bowl, and about a half gallon vase thing I had laying around. A friend of mine is coming to take about 3 of them tomorrow, but that still leaves me with about 12 fish! I haven’t had goldfish since I was a kid, so I’m doing research to try and figure out how to take care of my little foundlings. This weekend I was planning on buying a bigger tank and such, and I was wondering if you could tell me what you think I need to get.

hi!,
i want to ask some questions that in which exact temperature can a golfish can live longer?and how much feed should i give to my goldfish??i have one in a fishbowl..plizz tell me..and how much longer a goldfish can survive in a fishbowl??

I have one goldfish in a bowl for the past 4 yrs. (We started out with 3.) I feed it mini pellets- what it can eat in about 1 min. Now up to 5-6 pellets twice a day. I use bottled water or water that has been boiled, filtered and cooled then sit for 24 hrs at room temp before using.
I add water when it evaporates and clean the waste out with a siphon tube 1x wk then add clean water up to the widest part of the bowl. Some algae grows from the sunlight which makes more oxygen for the fish. When the bowl looks really dirty or too much algae growth, I remove the fish with a clean plastic container filled with water and completely dump the water, rinse with clean water and dry with a paper towel. Then fill the bowl back up and replace the fish with the small amount of original water from the platic container.
I put in a grain of sea salt when I replace all the water. (Don’t use too much, the salt doesn’t evaporate.)
I also use teatree oil according to the directions once in a while.
I sometimes let the fish go without feeding over the weekend when I am away. In my experience the fish can live in a range of temperatures as long as you do not suddenly change the temperature of the water i.e. keep away from space heaters and air conditioners.
Hope this info helps.

Hi Jenny,

First off taking care of goldfish in a bowl you may have not so much luck with it. There is no air pump or aquarium filter in which goldfish really do need. If you can think about buying a small 10-20 gallon aquarium with air pump and filter and you will enjoy your hobby more with less maintenance.

As to adding dechlorinator to the water I know for Aqua Plus Conditioner it is one capful per every 10 gallons, if you add more don’t worry about it as it adds to the protective slime coating on your goldfish.

As to why your fish poop is red it may be two things:

1. Your goldfish may have something serious wrong inside, parasites or organ damage or
2. It may be just what you are feeding your goldfish.

There are many types of fish food on the market today and if it multi-coloured flake food that could make your goldfish poop red. i wouldn’t worry to much now but definitely keep an eye out on him. Myself personally I think he is okay.

What you should do is also add beneficial bacteria to the water each time you do a water change as well. This helps keep levels up as this is what breaks down your fish waste. Also if you don’t already put some aquarium gravel in your goldfish bowl so beneficial bacteria will have a spot to grow.

If you have anymore questions please feel free to stop by my goldfish blog anytime.

i have two very small goldfish i currently have them in a glass tank with no filter or air pump, but would like to put them in a large fish bowl would this cause them any harm?

I have a fish bowl probably a gallon size. 2 different times I have bought a gold fish for the bowl and they have died within two weeks. It seems that each time before they had died. They kept coming up to the top and breathing in air. Am I sulfating these fish? I don’t have a pump as it is just an old school fish bowl. Am I better off getting a beta for the bowl?

HI! i won a goldfish at a fall party a few days ago. I bought the bowl and some rocks to go on the bottom. My goldfish is a little white which I thought was normal. When I got him into his new home he doesn't really swim around he just sits in one spot, and when I feed him he wont swim to the top to get the food. I have to put a straw in the tank and blow bubbles to move the food around for him to see it. Is he just lonely? Should I get another fish to put in the bowl?

Hi, I'm a beginner fish owner. I have just bought 2 goldfish. i've put them in a fair sized bowl. Have put pebbles and fake hydrilla too;) I love them alot but i've heard they have a very short lifespan. How long is it really? I feed them only once a day as told, and replace one glass of bowl-water with new water in the evening, and two glasses every morning. I spend decent amount of time around them.. But sometimes one od them starts swimming in a crazy manner for about 5 seconds! why is that? and how can i help it? And is it bad if they come to the top of the water level? How can i help it? the temp. here is about 19C. can i put a pump in a bowl?

My suggestion to you really is to buy a small 10 gallon aquarium would be better. That way you can have a small air pump, small AquaClear filter system and an overall better environment for your goldfish.

If your goldfish are gasping at the top of the water you should aerate your water. Its a lack of oxygen and a sign of stress.

All fish tanks should have a proper size filter and air pump and really fish bowls are not really recommended for taking care of goldfish. They are too small and the lifespan of a goldfish will not be as long as it should. With proper maintenance and fish care your goldfish can live 15-20 years but will be less depending on the quality of care and water.

Best suggestion is think about investing into a larger fish tank Kasturi. Your goldfish will love you for it.

Anymore questions please feel free to ask. Also come join me on my forum so you can talk to other people involved with goldfish.

Hi. I just won three very small goldfish at an event. I'm able to get to the pet store tomorrow, but I was wondering if blowing air through a straw would suffice fur aerating the tank tonight? Hope someone knows the answer!

Hi. Im Sammy… I just got a fish two days ago. I have him in a fishbowl. About a hour ago my fish's head kept floating upward but his bottom half would stay down. My fish is moving his two front flippers a lot to make himself stright again… I looked at other sites and all people were saying was that fishbowls were bad. I never knew they were. Or are they? People were saying that bowls don't give fish oxygen. He hasn't been coming to the top looking for oxygen though.. Could someone please tell me why he is having to flap his flippers so hard just to stay in one spot so his head woun't start floating upward. Thanks. -Sammy

This is disgusting. How can you be encouraging these idiots to keep goldfish in bowls, its so cruel. A goldfish needs ATLEAST 20 gallons to itself. Goldfish are by no means easy or cheap to care for and people who think they can just throw them in a bowl are stupid. They stick 3 goldfish in a one gallon bowl and then wonder why they don't live. Keeping goldfish in these tiny bowls is stunting their growth giving them, much uneeded stress, leaving them far more open to disease as i doubt any of these morons have a clue about CYCLING their tanks at all, and of course stunting growth leads to massive internal organ failure. Goldfish live well over 15 years, and up to 18" if given the right water conditions and sized housing, yet people stil think they can throw them in a bowl and they'll only grow to the size of their bowl and they'll be fine. No, this is a myth and you are SERIOUSLY DOING HARM TO YOUR FISH.If you can't get a real tank, with filtration, and aeration, don't get a goldfish, and if you still do, don't expect it to live forever, or even to the end of the month.

I have just bought a new bowl and a pair of goldfish… I've filled the bowl with about a little over 3 liters of water…i just read all the post and think its not right to keep them in a bowl. Further more, these 2 looked happy and were playing for a while but about 30 mins ago I saw them coming to the top and gasping air. OMG its 3.00 am in india now..do i have time tilll morning 10 am for me to buy a bubble blower? Are they having a tough time breathing …will they survive till morning… πŸ™

Hi.

Yesterday I won a goldfish at the fair and today I bought a 1 Gallon fish bowl, gravel, food, AquaSafe, and some fake plants. I have also added a few large stones in there as well. The thing is I would very much like to get a tank for him as reading about the cruelty of fish bowls, but my Mom denies that I get one. So I have to live with the bowl. I feed him 2 flakes a day and I will change one glass of water from the bowl every day. I will cleane the bowl out every other day. I am worried about the oxygen in the bowl though. I will sometimes go into my room and blow bubbles through a straw to potentially help. Leo, the fish, often just sits in one spot though. I need to stir up the water to make the flakes reach his "spot" because he won't go up to get them. Only once in a while will I catch him swimming around.

So, I was wondering if you could give me some tips and ideas about fish bowl care being how I have no other choice. I want to save up my babysitting money to get a small pump to help, but I need some ideas on what I should get Leo to help and why he just sits there adn other helpful tips.

Thank you.

P.S Please note that I am only 12 and can't afford big $100 pumps and all.

Taking care of a goldfish in a fish bowl can be done but does require more maintenance such as water changes, water testing etc. If your mom won't invest in a bigger fish tank for you then you'll just have to make sure certain things are done for Leo.

1. Don't overfeed your goldfish. If Leo won't eat what you give him within 2 minutes, remove fish food as this will foul your water.

2. Do a water change of about 25 % at least every 2 days, until you can invest in a filter and air pump.

3. Test your water regularly.

When you save up enough money for an air pump what you could get as it a cheap and affordable air pump is the Elite Mini Air Pump by Hagen. This will cost you between $7.99 – $9.99. This will help. Every living thing needs oxygen and this will help make Leo's home better.

Hope this gives you a few things things to make sure you do to in order to provide the best possible care for your goldfish.

Thanks for your comment! Please feel free to ask anymore goldfish questions you may have.

P.S. What country are you writing from within the USA, Canada?

Thanks,

Jamie Boyle
Goldfish Guy

Thank you very much!

Today he has been much more active so I am thinking that it is just him getting used to his new home. When you said to test the water what do you mean by that? How, can I test Leo's water?

Thank you.

hai i bought two gold fish in a bowl but after a day one died after a two day anothe ralso died ….. before die they fish swim on the top of bowl…. pls tel me the reason why they died give me the solution

Hi, I have a one inch goldfish that I recently bought at a pet store. I have a very large fishbowl, probably about 1.5 gallons, and I am changing the water regularly. I keep hearing different things about how to prepare the water for him. I have heard not to use water conditioner for tap water, and to just let it sit for 24 hours then put the fish directly in it, I have heard to use water conditioner (which I do… 1/2 tsp per gallon), and i do 25% water changes every other day. He is still becoming sort of lethargic, and just sits on the bottom of the bowl making slight adjustments to keep him (or it's) self stable, and only moves when the table is accidentally bumped, or if I turn the light on (of which then he swims sparatically around the bowl as if to hide, or scared). Am I doing something wrong, and is there anything I can do to further help my fishy?

Thanks, Heather.

Hi from australia,
We have 3 goldfish in a 20L bowl most days the house is locked up. Recently the weather here has been very hot and the tempreature in the house is about 30 degrees. The goldfish have been spending alot of time up the top of the bowl getting air. Is this because of the water temp? Would an air stone help to cool the water?

Hi Bev,

What is occurring is your goldfish are lacking oxygen. You will see goldfish coming up and gasping for air and this is one of those signs.

In warmer climates where ponds are exposed to lots of natural sunlight and the water warms up there is a lack of oxygen. What people need to do is aerate the water right away using a garden hose. For aquariums it's basically the same. In warmer water there is less available oxygen then cooler water.

You should really add an air pump to help aerate your water. Another thing too is that you should really have a filter. This will increase the chances to a longer life span for goldfish.

Best of luck with your goldfish and if you have any more questions on fish care please feel free to comment.

Sincerely,

Jamie Boyle

I have a goldfish in a 21 litre tank with a filter/pump and recently moved house and had to empty the water out and transport him in a small bucket. Since putting him back in his tank at this new house he swims back and forth at the front of the tank quite fast. However if i turn the light off in my room he seems to calm down and swims more calmly and not just pacing. But i can't keep the light in my room off when ever its dark. Why is my fish doing this? Is there anything i can do short of covering the tank to make it dark?

Kiwi,

Whenever you introduce goldfish to a new aquarium set up you should always keep the light off in the fish tank. Your goldfish needs to get use to its new home and they are scared. Keep your light off in your fish tank or cover your aquarium up with a blanket.

If you continue to keep the fish tank light on they could injure themselves by running into the glass, tank ornaments, aquarium rocks etc.. and get sick.

Just a suggestion but I would keep them off for a few days.

Thanks,

Sincerely,

I just found this site… I'm not really sure on if you will answer or how fast. I just got a fish yesterday and he died while I was at school πŸ™ he had everything the petstore guy told me to get except for a snazzy tank and his bowl… was cleaned out with soap πŸ™ I had no idea what harm this would do to him. well I really do want another fish but i dot want to kill him too. so i was thinking about getting a small tank… can you tell me exactly what to get for my goldfish. and I'm also really confused on what to do when I first move him into his tank… the water temperatures matching or whatever really confuses me. Please explain… thanks.

Jamie is absolutely right, it is a common mistake people thinks that Goldfish should live in a bowl.
Goldfish can survive in a bowl but it is MUCH better to let him live in an aquarium

I have goldfish in a bowl, and I would adore an aquarium for them. Unfortunately, I have NO ROOM for a ten-gallon aquarium. Are there any smaller ones that I could get for not much money? I'm a fish-loving broke college student.

I just got a goldfish at a fair and I have to keep it in a bowl. Would I be able to. Give it enough oxygen by keeping a plant in it and not using any kind if pump? Also when you said that I should change out 25% of thewater every 2 days, do I let this water sit out so the chlorine gets out?

Adding a plant to your goldfish bowl will not give your goldfish the necessary oxygen it needs. By adding an air pump and changing the water will add oxygen to your fish bowl.

When you change the water you need to either let it sit for 4-5 days to allow all the chlorine escape. A better option for you for water changes is to buy some declorinator at the pet store which will remove the chlorine. It also helps protect your goldfish by reducing stress and adding to its slime coating which protects your goldfish from diseases and parasites.

If you have anymore questions concerning your goldfish bowl please feel free to ask. Best of luck with your new goldfish.

Sincerely,
