Do Goldfish Need An Air Pump In Fish Bowl or Aquarium?

By Jamie Boyle

Do goldfish need an aquarium air pump? Yes and no really. If you want your goldfish to live a long healthy life then go with an air pump. Having an air pump in the aquarium or goldfish bowl helps in so many ways. It creates gas exchange and helps add oxygen to the water. Some people believe that goldfish will live just fine without an air pump and that may be so. For instance if you have an aquarium and have a filter running this helps add oxygen to the water. The water flowing in forces oxygen into the water increasing the oxygen level that fish need.

Goldfish need oxygen too. For instance on hot sunny days in goldfish ponds you may see your fish coming to the surface gasping for air. This happens especially when you have green algae blooms. GoldfishWhat you need to do is add oxygen quickly to the water. Spray a hose directly into the water will help increase the oxygen level. In warm hot sunny days the oxygen level is low as the temperature of the water is high. In cold water is where you see an abundance of oxygen available. There is more oxygen in cold water then there is warm water. So in reference to aquarium air pumps they are highly beneficial to a properly functional goldfish tank.

Aquarium Air Pumps - Elite Air Pump Maxima

Goldfish need plenty of oxygen and an aquarium air pump is highly recommended as it helps reduce stress too. As we all know with stress can come sickness and diseases so it is always best to take all necessary steps to keeping goldfish healthy. I mentioned about a goldfish pond in the summer just to explain a little more on this subject. As far as goldfish bowls and aquariums are concerned it is to your best option to go and equip your fish tank with an air pump. The agitation that happens at the surface of the water will add oxygen to your fish tank. This will create a healthier home for your fish and will reduce stress. If people are planning on having good luck taking care of goldfish then I would suggest not to go and try and keep them in a goldfish bowl. It’s just too small and in order to have great luck with fish keeping I would get all the proper equipment needed such as air pump, filter and aquarium gravel. With basically everything in life things need oxygen to live and goldfish are much the same. Also beneficial bacteria in your filter need oxygen to live and reproduce. Air pumps can help in so many ways in keeping an aquarium healthy. I hope this helps give you more of an idea on why people should really have an air pump in their fish tank. Your goldfish will like you for it and you will have better luck with your overall experience in fish keeping. Having an air pump in your goldfish aquarium is absolutely necessary towards optimum fish health.

We bought a 17litre tank and with it a filter, this has been set up a week and we added 2 goldfish today, do we need to purchase an air pump as well?

Yes goldfish tanks do require an air pump. Yes oxygen is added to the water with a filter but air pumps ensure there is an adequate amount of oxygen available for your goldfish. They are not expensive and my suggestion is for you to buy an air pump for your aquarium. You can get one for about $10-$15 or even less.

Your Guide To Goldfish Care

We just got a goldfish for a friend's birthday. We are keeping it in a bowl without a pump or filter. How long will it live?

How long can a goldfish live without an air pump or aquarium filter is really hard to say. I can tell you this, it won't live as long as a goldfish would in the proper environment including adequate size, filter and pump.

The biggest problem you'll have is with water chemistry going bad. If you keep up with regular water changes and maintenance on a regular basis you'll do good. If you forget to keep up with it you goldfish will eventually get sick and possibly die.

My best advice for you and your goldfish is to invest into a aquarium filter and pump to fully enjoy the hobby.

Best of luck with your goldfish!

In order for the gold fish to stay healthy, they should have enough oxygen in their aquarium. So if you want them to live long, you should put an air pump.

If I buy a gold fish or two, and I wish to place them in a bowl. Is that safe for them to live? Will it do any harm to them?

Do i need to keep the electric pump ON the whole day and night for my ONE gold fish in a 7" fish bowl I HAVE NOT PUT A FILTER.

Do i need to keep the electric air pump ON the whole day and night for my Gold fish in a 7" fish bowl. I have not put a filter but change the water daily. i have got the fish 2 days back and last night i switched of the electric air pump. shud i continue this daily and leave the air pump on only for 2 or 3 hours in the day.

If you have a goldfish bowl you can have a small air pump to aerate the water. Do not have it on full blast or your goldfish will get exhausted as he would have no rest time.

What I would do later on is invest into an aquarium that will be larger then equip it with a air pump, aquarium filter, gravel etc.. By having a fish tank you would have less maintenance and your goldfish will live a longer, healthier and happy life.

For the meantime you can shut it off at night if you choose.

Ok, Ok, I get it… Fish are creatures who need oxygen too. But I was in Bangkok last summer and everywhere I went there were little fish, some goldfish and Koi too, in pots along with water lilies, mini cattails and other plants-no filter, no pumps, nothing, oh except heat and lots of it, day after day. I'd like to recreate the water/fish/plant garden on my deck. My pots are 25-30 gallon and I'd like the fish to survive the summer… do I still need an air pump?
