How Long Can A Goldfish Survive Out Of Water From Their Aquarium or Pond?

Many people have been emailing me wondering how long can a goldfish survive out of water before dying? To be honest it depends on the strength of your goldfish. Some goldfish can tolerate more things then others while weaker fish will perish. As the saying goes “Only The Strong Survive”. How long a goldfish can survive out of water depends on its overall health and will to live.

To give you some sort of answer on this, I would say anything over 30 minutes and you will be lucky. There was one time that we had a large koi in our aquarium about 10 years ago now and my mother came home to find out that the koi had jumped out of the aquarium onto the floor which was carpet at the time. Goldfish Jumped Out Of Water - How Long Can A Goldfish Survive Out Of Water?It is estimated that the koi was there between 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours. It looked pretty dry and we were not sure if it would survive. We placed the koi back into the aquarium and it floated to the bottom on its side. Then all of a sudden its gills started moving. Within 5 to 10 minutes it started swimming around like nothing ever happened. It was one of my favourite koi at the time and I was happy it survived.

You see some fish are simply able to handle more then others. While some goldfish may only survive 30 minutes out of water max, others may be able to tolerate longer. Some species of fish are able to breath air as it’s one of their unique capabilities that enable them to survive in low oxygen levels and droughts. If you ever watched the show River Monsters, Jeremy Wade, extreme angler, talks about how certain river fish are able to breath air due to low oxygen levels which enable them to survive. Some fish like catfish and eels are able to live a long time out of water. If you’ve never watched his show before, it’s quite interesting to see the different varieties of River Monsters that could be lurking in your waters. I was quite shocked to learn about Bull Sharks being in Rivers found in New Jersey some have been reported. Bull sharks are able to live in freshwater and salt water. It’s a show that I definitely suggest taking the time to watch!

Back to the question at hand, it really all depends. I am not going to test this out and risk the life of a goldfish but from looking across the Internet as well many have reported that their goldfish has survived out of water from anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 1/2 hours. If your taking care of your goldfish good and feed high quality fish food and are generally healthy it may just survive long periods of time out of water. My suggestion to you all is keep your goldfish in water then we don’t have to wonder how long your goldfish can live for.

Do Goldfish Eat Pond Plants and Water Lilies Like Koi Fish?

Goldfish do eat many things but they don’t really eat pond plants and water lilies like koi fish do. Goldfish may pick at pond plants and water lilies a little but they will not disturb them like koi.

You see koi fish are scavengers and they have barbels also known as whiskers under their mouth in which they used to search for food. It’s in the search for food that koi fish disturb plants in ponds. They may pick and eat water plants but not so much.

I know goldfish don’t grow nearly as big as koi fish do and this may be a factor. I know I’ve had many koi and goldfish and koi don’t really bother my water lilies at all. The worst they’ve done is uproot a hardy water lily in the past but that’s my fault as I didn’t put large rocks around it to prevent it from happening. As far as goldfish are concerned you don’t have to worry about them eating your pond plants and water lilies. Keep your goldfish well fed and you’ll have no worries of them eating your water plants.

How Many Eggs Does A Female Goldfish Lay During Breeding Season?

When goldfish begin breeding or spawning a large female goldfish can lay up to 10,000 eggs. How many eggs that you can save rest on your experience in breeding goldfish. One thing that all pond and aquarium owners should know is that despite the fact that the female goldfish has laid 10,000 eggs or so many of these will not survive.

There are many factors that contribute to the loss of many of the goldfish eggs. If your looking at breeding goldfish and having some success at it you should do as much research on spawning as you can.

How Long Does It Take Goldfish Eggs To Hatch?

Once your goldfish spawn it will take some time for the fish eggs to hatch. You will notice the goldfish eggs are like small bubbles all over the roots of plants, the aquarium glass, pond liner, under water lily pads and more. These goldfish eggs will hatch as quick as 48-72 hrs. Generally speaking goldfish eggs usually takes between 5-7 days from the time the goldfish have spawned in order to hatch.

How long does it take goldfish eggs to hatch you ask? Well it all depends on the water temperature. The warmer the water the faster the goldfish eggs will hatch. During this time they do become vulnerable to fungus. You may soon see fungus covering the goldfish eggs and turn white that looks like fuzzy cotton balls. You will need to buy some fish egg fungus prevention medication in order to protect the eggs.

How Often Do Goldfish Lay Eggs, Breed or Spawn?

If your wondering on how often do goldfish breed, lay eggs or spawn it all depends on the water temperature. Water temperature? Yes the water temperature is what determines whether or not the goldfish are ready to breed or spawn along with the age of this fish of course. First off the goldfish needs to be sexually mature or old enough to breed and the eggs within the female goldfish need to be mature as well.

Your pretty much safe to say that goldfish will breed between 2-3 times a year and maybe more depending on where you live. You see in a warmer climate like Florida it may be possible to have more goldfish spawnings then someone living within Canada who only have a short summer. The temperature of the water is what controls the goldfish breeding process. Every day that goes by that the water temperature is above 15 degrees celsius counts towards your 1000 degrees celsius schedule. For example every days that the water temperature is over 15 degrees celsius counts until you reach 1000 degrees celsius days. I will explain more below.

How Often Do Goldfish Spawn, Breed and Lay Eggs?

Lets say that you have 10 straight days the water temperature in your fish pond or aquarium is 20 degrees celsius then this would equal 200 degrees celsius ( 10 x 20 = 200) that means if it stayed like that for 50 straight days at 20 degrees celsius water temperature then that would equal the 1000 degree days that goldfish need to go through in order to be ready to breed. After 1000 degree days the eggs within the female goldfish are mature enough and the chances of a golfish spawning is any day now.

If you keep track of the daily water temperature daily will be your best way at determining how soon or often your goldfish will be breeding or laying eggs. Remember the male goldfish needs to be sexually mature enough too. If your interested in breeding goldfish then it’s best to learn as much as you can. How To Protect Goldfish Eggs From Developing Fungus and Hatching?

One of the biggest problem with goldfish eggs is the fungus that develops and you will need to prevent this from spreading to other fertile eggs. The goldfish eggs that are white are the ones that will develop fungus and if left in the aquarium it will quickly spread killing other fish eggs before they begin hatching.

What you will need to do to protect the goldfish eggs from fungus is the following:

2. Add a few drops of Methylene blue ( prevents fungus from occurring on eggs)
3. Make sure you water quality is perfect!

If you have poor water quality in your goldfish tank the chances of an unsuccessful breeding is very high. These baby goldfish will be very small and weak when the fish eggs begin hatching and you need to do everything you can to help protect your baby goldfish. I know many goldfish owners often have this problem with fungus covering all the fish eggs but if you add Methylene blue to your aquarium I guarantee that you will have plenty of baby goldfish fry. Methylene blue is a chemical used that protects fish eggs that have just been layed from being infected by fungus.

How To Protect Baby Goldfish Fry From Aquarium Filter and Pond Predators?

In order to have many baby goldfish fry from your breeding you will need to know how to protect your baby fish from not only pond predators but from your aquarium filter intake as well.

Baby goldfish can be killed or injured from a variety of different ways. As soon as your goldfish breed and lay their eggs on the spawning mops or water plants they become prey to many different insects. These insects include the water boatman, water beetle and more. If insects weren’t enough to worry about if you don’t treat the water to protect the fish eggs some will quickly be overtaken by fungus. As you can see lots can go wrong even before they get a chance to hatch and develop into goldfish.

Some other things you will need to do to protect your baby goldfish is to make sure you remove the goldfish that have spawned from your breeding tank set up. If you don’t they will quickly eat up all the goldfish eggs. Another thing you need to do is protect the newly hatched baby goldfish from getting sucked up in the filter. For this you can simply use an old or new filter sponge and simply make a little cut into it and slide the filter pipe inside. This will prevent your baby goldfish from getting sucked up into the aquarium filter. Something I do as well using the Hagen AquaClear Power filter system is turn it to low. Remember these baby goldfish are very small and too strong of water current can damage, injure or stress them out and die. Yes they do need exercise but too much where they can become exhausted can be harmful as well. This method using a simple filter sponge works great at protecting baby goldfish fry from aquarium filter intake.

I’ve seen some other methods that people have tried too when they were breeding goldfish that seems to work as well. What they did was used a pop bottle, poked holes in it and slid the filter pipe inside and then wrapped it with pantyhose. If you do try this method make sure you place plenty of holes as this will evenly distribute the amount of suction from each hole. This will work too! One note to remember is to be careful and make sure it is a tight fit on the top of the pop bottle where the filter pipe goes inside. If not small baby goldfish can get through and get sucked up by the filter. If it’s not a tight fit you can simply cut up small pieces of filter sponge and jam it in and around the filter pipe preventing any chance of danger when raising baby goldfish.

As you can see there are many dangers to goldfish even before they hatch and then when they do they have much bigger pond predators to worry about too. For many pond owners they often learn the hard way and end up losing all of the goldfish, koi or other types of fish in their pond from predators. Knowing what to feed baby goldfish fry will increase your success at having many healthy baby goldfish.

When baby goldfish fry first hatch they feed on the yolk sac before they begin swimming on their own. Feeding baby goldfish after they hatch is very important to their survival. Start feeding them liquid or powdered paste food. You can buy fish food for baby fry at you local pet store.

How To Protect Baby Goldfish Fry From Filter?The next thing you will need to be very careful with is doing water changes and filtering your fish tank when it contains baby goldfish. Remember these fish are very small and you need to be careful and rig up something where your intake is for your aquarium filter. What I’ve done in the past is place a filter sponge over the intake pipe to your filter this will help prevent baby goldfish fry from getting sucked up. The same can be done when doing water changes with your aquarium gravel cleaner.

In order to raise baby goldfish of high quality you need to cull the fry to have the best possible goldfish. What you need to do is cull them and remove any baby goldfish that has any deformities such as body, missing fins, tail, eyes etc.. Culling baby goldfish fry should be done at 2 weeks. As your baby goldfish fry grow you will need to observe your new fish and do future culls.

How To Raise Baby Goldfish Fry

Raising baby goldfish fry takes time and devotion in order to have healthy goldfish. Many people have had goldfish breedings before but are often disappointed when they don’t have many baby goldfish as they suspected. Most of the time it’s because they don’t separate the male and female goldfish from where the eggs were laid. If they don’t remove the goldfish parents they will eat and consume all the fish eggs. Follow proper steps and planning when raising baby goldfish fry and you’ll be happy with the results.
